Through the Language Glass

For anyone that missed this weeks NYTimes Magazine, there appeared a fascinating article titled “Does Your Language Shape How You Think?”

The article was adapted from a book set to be released in the next couple of days, titled: “Through the Language Glass: Why the World Looks Different in Other Languages.” The author, Guy Deutscher, is an honorary research fellow at the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures at the University of Manchester. His new book, will be published by Metropolitan Books, available Aug 31 from Amazon.

Do try to ignore the kiss of death ugly dust jacket as you’re reading.  Great title, great material, timely, interesting, and . . . that’s the best cover design anyone could come up with?   But moving on . . . .

In an age when people in some countries are stoning people to death (Afganistan) while people in others are shooting at and burning religious centers (US-Tennesee), anything people can do to build understanding of themselves and those they regard as “other,” needs to be attempted.

We are putting Guy’s volume on our list of books to be read soon.  But we’re putting a way more attractive paper jacket on it before we leave it out on the coffee table.
