Making Better PDF Books: 3 Little Bears & how to tame them

Three Little Bears by Anne-Reneé Livingston c2007

Ok, a bit of catching up.

If you have a PDF version of your book, you’ll need to add 3 things to make it more user friendly and in some cases, more retailer saleable. We recommend you put all of these things in your PDF books.  We didn’t the first time around. It was a mistake. We’re fixing it.

A Hyperlinked TOC: If you go to the front of a book in a read, and see blue, underlined chapters, those are live links. Clicking them gets you directly to that part of the book.  Better books have a Table of Contents that’s hyperlinked and yours should too.

Bookmarks

If you open a book in your ADE reader, you’ll see a navigation column on the left side. If you click on the headings, you can jump forward or back in the book. These are bookmarks. They are always visible to the reader, unlike the TOC. Better books have a Bookmarks and yours should too.

Embedded cover.

There are some sellers that require this, but it’s just a good thing in general so that when your book is pulled up on its shelf in the reader’s device, they see the cover image, not a blank white page.  The cover image is placed in the PDF as the first page, in other words, you are pasting a jpg/png/tiff of your book’s cover into the first page of your pdf. That’s called embedding.
